Anger is a normal and healthy emotion but many of us find it difficult to communicate our anger effectively. Some young people report having trouble preventing their anger from causing problems in their lives. This workshop is designed to provide professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to assist a young person understand and manage their anger more effectively.

Training objectives:

  • Participants will have an understanding of the difference between anger and aggression
  • Participants will understand some of the causes of aggression
  • Participants will be familiar with the “pressure cooker” model of aggression
  • Participants will have a number of strategies to assist the young person to manage their aggression
  • Participants will have an understanding of the functions of aggression
  • Participants will explore how to respond to the young person’s aggression in ways that will encourage their use of positive alternatives

Some young people deliberately harm themselves whilst those around them, including professionals, may find it difficult to respond appropriately. This workshop is designed to increase participants’ understanding, skills and confidence in responding to self-harming behaviour in young people.

Training objectives:

  • Participants will be able to differentiate between self-harming, risk-taking and suicidal behaviours
  • Participants will develop an understanding of their own attitudes, beliefs and feelings regarding self-harm
  • Participants will be able to identify factors that contribute to and maintain self-harming behaviours
  • Participants will be able to understand the cyclical nature of self-harm, and use this model for assessment and intervention planning
  • Participants will be able to raise the issue of self-harm with young people and assess self-harm behaviour
  • Participants will be able to apply skills and strategies to respond to and support young people and those in their support networks.

Early intervention and identification of signs of an emerging psychosis can improve a young person’s chances of recovery. Early intervention can also reduce the impact of secondary morbidity issues such as depression, anxiety and suicide. This workshop is designed to assist workers to increase their understanding, skills and confidence in responding to young people experiencing psychosis.

Training Objectives:

  • Participants will increase their knowledge and understanding of psychosis.
  • Participants will develop their cultural awareness of psychosis in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CaLD young people.
  • Participants will develop their understanding of the importance of early identification and intervention.
  • Participants will develop skills in recognising early warning signs that may indicate psychosis.
  • Participants will develop the skills to assess risks associated with symptoms of psychosis.
  • Participants will build on their ability to respond appropriately to challenging behaviour that may be associated with symptoms of psychosis.
  • Participants will develop their knowledge of appropriate referral and support agencies.

Understanding and responding to suicidal behaviour in young people

In Australia, suicide is the second most common cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 24. Recent research suggests that most young people who complete suicide tell someone about their plans prior to the event. This workshop is designed for participants to develop knowledge and skills in understanding, assessing and responding to young people who may be at risk of suicide.

Training Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to distinguish between suicidal, self-harming and high-risk behaviours.
  • Participants will acquire a framework and skills for assessing suicide risk.
  • Participants will be assisted to develop knowledge and skills in intervention strategies.
  • Participants will acquire an understanding of the issues of contagion and postvention.
  • Participants will develop their knowledge of appropriate resources, and referral and support agencies.

At times professionals working with youth may be faced with sudden, unpredictable or even dangerous behaviour. Managing crisis behaviours such as intoxication, aggression or explosive expressions of feelings can be a challenge for the worker and their agency. It is important to manage these situations in a way that maintains respect, self-determination and care for the young person whilst setting limits on dangerous or unacceptable behaviour. This workshop is designed to equip workers with the tools and understanding to better manage these situations.

Training Objectives:

  • Participants will have knowledge in the general principals of crisis intervention.
  • Participants will have a model to inform their responses to crisis situations, including identifying the stages in the escalation and resolution of a crisis.
  • Participants will develop knowledge and skills in responding to difficult and complex behaviours; including aggression, intoxication and challenging behaviour.
  • Participants will explore what to do after a crisis event.
  • Participants will understand how a crisis may impact on them, to manage their own reactions and to support themselves and colleagues after a crisis.

Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have needs and issues that are unique to their culture and as a result may require a different approach to support and treatment. Using narrative and experiential training techniques, this workshop is designed to raise awareness of basic cultural issues to enhance workers awareness, skills and confidence in engaging and working with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a culturally sensitive and affirming approach. To achieve this, the training will focus on the current environments in which they reside while taking into consideration historical issues and how these issues may impact on young people today.

Training Objectives:

  • Participants will develop an increased awareness of issues facing young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
  • Participants will improve their awareness, knowledge and skills in culturally sensitive work practice.
  • Participants will have an increased capacity to identify service barriers to culturally appropriate practices.
  • Participants will have an increased understanding of intergenerational issues and the impact they have on young people.
